How Shard Eruptions Work, Black vs Red Shards, Rewards & How to Complete Them
I checked the current official Sky Help Center plus current shard scheduling data and cross-checked the basic mechanics against the Sky Wiki.
What is a Shard Eruption?
A Shard Eruption happens when pieces of the Eye of Eden fall into one of Sky’s realms.
When a shard lands, players can work together to clear the Darkness surrounding it. The official Sky Help Center confirms that weaker eruptions provide Candle Light, while stronger eruptions can provide Ascended Candle Light.
There are two main types:

The Sky Wiki glossary identifies black shards as Weak Eruptions and red shards as Strong Eruptions.
🔴 Red Shard vs ⚫ Black Shard
This is the most important thing to understand.
⚫ Black Shard
Black shards are weaker eruptions.
Your objective is to clear the Darkness around the fallen shard.
The reward is Light that contributes toward regular Candles.
🔴 Red Shard
Red shards are stronger eruptions.
They are more important if you’re looking for Ascended Candle Light.
The official Help Center states that stronger eruptions provide Light for Ascended Candles and can also provide opportunities related to the Season of Shattering memories.
🕯️ How to Find a Shard
You don’t always need to search the entire realm.
Step 1 — Go to Home
Look at the realm portals.
The fallen-shard indicator can show which realm currently has an active eruption. The official Help Center specifically recommends looking for the shard sign on the realm gates in Home.
Step 2 — Check the current schedule
Shard locations aren’t simply random every time you enter a realm.
Current schedule data provides the location and eruption windows for each day.
For example, September 26, 2026 is currently listed as:
Daylight Prairie — Temple of the Prairie
with three eruption windows:
- 05:18–09:10
- 13:18–17:10
- 21:18–01:10
The schedule page lists this eruption as a stronger one.
Because these times are live and can change, don’t use today’s times as permanent information in an evergreen guide.
🧹 How to Clear a Shard
Once you’ve reached the location:
1. Find the fallen shard
Look for the large shard and the surrounding Darkness.
2. Burn the Darkness
Use your Flame to burn the Darkness away.
3. Watch your surroundings
The shard area can be dangerous, especially during stronger eruptions.
Don’t focus so heavily on burning that you ignore your Sky Kid’s Light.
4. Work together
You don’t necessarily have to do everything alone.
Other players can help clear the Darkness, and the official guide specifically encourages players to join others.
5. Finish the eruption
Continue clearing until the event is completed.
Then collect the resulting Light/reward.
💡 Why Didn’t I Get an Ascended Candle?
This is a common point of confusion.
Not every Shard Eruption gives Ascended Candle Light.
The official distinction is:
Weak eruption → Candle Light
Strong eruption → Ascended Candle Light
So if you complete a black/weak eruption and don’t receive Ascended Candle Light, that is not necessarily a bug.
This is also why checking the shard type before spending time traveling to it is useful.
🪽 Why Red Shards Matter for Completion
Strong Shard Eruptions are also connected to Shattering memories.
Official patch notes explain that red-shard eruptions continue to provide Shattering memories and Ascended Candles. Players who haven’t completed the Shattering memory quests can progress through them when a stronger eruption is cleared.
So red shards aren’t simply another Candle farming method—they can also matter for collection/completion goals.
⏰ How Often Do Shards Appear?
Don’t rely on an old fixed rule such as:
“Red shards are always Friday–Sunday.”
That was part of an earlier system. The official patch notes explain that after the Season of Shattering, the eruption strength could vary by day and some days could have no eruption at all.
Current 2026 scheduling data demonstrates that the schedule varies by date and location.
For Sky World Light content, always verify the current schedule before publishing a specific day’s location or time.

If you’re new to Shard Eruptions:
Before going:
☐ Check today’s shard type
☐ Check the realm
☐ Check the exact location
☐ Check an active eruption window
When you arrive:
☐ Find the Darkness
☐ Burn the Darkness
☐ Recharge when necessary
☐ Work with other players
☐ Complete the eruption
☐ Collect your reward
If you’re farming Ascended Candle Light:
➡️ Prioritize Strong/Red Shard Eruptions rather than assuming every shard will provide them.
